The Voigtlander Vitessa Camera is a testament to German engineering and design. Known for their cutting-edge optics and machining, Voigtlander created this 35mm camera to truly stand out in the post-World War II era. The Vitessa is renowned for its excellent optics, with the most coveted Vitessa model featuring a 50mm f/2.0 Ultron lens. Other versions of the Vitessa included equally impressive f/2.8 and f/3.5 Color Skopar lenses.
One of the distinctive features of the Vitessa is its unique 'Kombi-Plunger' film advance mechanism, which also re-cocks the shutter. This innovative design allows photographers to rapidly fire off shots using their left index finger. Another highlight of the Vitessa is its 'barn door' mechanism for folding up the camera's lens. The split door design, hinging on both sides, extends the lens from the camera body akin to a cuckoo clock bird.
Between 1950 and 1954, Voigtlander produced several versions of the Vitessa with the Vitessa L featuring an uncoupled selenium cell light meter - though given the age of these meters they are often found non-functioning.
Despite its age and unique features, the Voigtlander Vitessa is an incredibly capable rangefinder camera known to produce excellent images. It's a camera that truly feels 'built into your hands'.
